Xiangtan City, established as a county during the Southern Dynasties, has a history of over 1,500 years. On December 7, 2016, Xiangtan was listed in the third batch of national new-type urbanization comprehensive pilot areas.

On January 29, 2021, it was included in the list of regions with remarkable performance in implementing solid work in 2020 announced by the Hunan Provincial People’s Government.
On February 24, 2022, the National Development and Reform Commission issued an official reply approving the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan Metropolitan Area Development Plan.
In 2023, Hunan’s first cross-city metro opened, realizing interconnection between Changsha and Xiangtan’s metro systems.
